An AI Logistics Agent Is Not a Freight Broker

Key Takeaways

  • An AI logistics agent is not a freight broker. A freight broker arranges transportation through carriers it sources. An AI logistics agent, such as Wilson, by Cartage, coordinates a company's freight with the company's own approved carriers.
  • The biggest difference is control: with a broker, the broker typically chooses the carrier and the carrier relationship sits with the broker. With an AI logistics agent, the company keeps its carriers, its rules and its approvals.
  • Freight brokers are regulated intermediaries: in the U.S., they need broker authority from the FMCSA and a $75,000 financial security. An AI logistics agent is software that executes coordination work for the shipper.
  • Each fits a different need: a broker helps find capacity a company doesn't have. An AI logistics agent helps a company run the freight it already moves with its own carriers.
  • Wilson books only carriers the company has approved, and it works within configurable approvals, escalation and a full change history.

What's the difference between an AI logistics agent and a freight broker?

A manufacturer is overwhelmed by carrier follow-up and asks: should we hand more loads to a broker, or use an AI logistics agent? Both promise less work for the team. But they work in opposite directions. One takes the load out of the team's hands. The other keeps it in their hands and does the coordination for them.

A freight broker arranges transportation by matching a shipper's load with a carrier the broker sources; an AI logistics agent executes the shipper's own freight coordination with the shipper's own approved carriers.

A freight broker is an intermediary. It takes the load, finds a carrier, sets the price it charges the shipper and manages the carrier relationship for that load. In the U.S., freight brokers must hold broker authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and maintain a $75,000 surety bond or trust fund.

An AI logistics agent is not an intermediary. It works on the company's behalf, inside the company's rules: it requests quotes from the company's carriers, books, confirms, follows up and responds to exceptions. For the full definition, see what is an AI logistics agent.

Who controls carriers, rates and decisions in each model?

With a freight broker, the broker typically controls carrier selection and the carrier relationship for the load; with an AI logistics agent, the company keeps control of its carriers, rates and approval rules.

Question Freight broker AI logistics agent, such as Wilson, by Cartage
Who chooses the carrier? Usually the broker, from carriers it sources The company's rules, from the company's approved carriers
Whose carrier relationships grow? Often the broker's The company's
How is the rate set? The broker quotes the shipper a price for the load Quotes come from the company's carriers
Who talks to the carrier? The broker The AI agent, on the company's behalf
Who approves decisions? The broker, within the agreement The company, through configurable approvals
What's the role? Regulated intermediary Software that executes coordination work
Visibility into each step Depends on what the broker shares Full change history of every message and action

Neither model is wrong. They solve different problems. The question is whether a company needs someone else to move the freight, or needs its own freight to move with less manual work.

When does a freight broker make sense?

A freight broker makes sense when a company needs capacity it doesn't have: new lanes, sudden volume spikes or loads its own carriers can't cover.

Common situations where a broker helps:

No carriers on a lane: the company ships somewhere new and has no carrier relationships there.

Volume spikes: seasonal peaks exceed what the company's carriers can handle.

Hard-to-cover loads: specialized or urgent freight that regular carriers decline.

Fully outsourced freight: the company prefers not to manage carriers at all.

An AI logistics agent addresses a different situation: the company already has carriers and lanes, but the team spends its day sending quote requests, confirming pickups, chasing updates and collecting PODs. See how AI handles carrier quotes, tenders and booking confirmations.

How does an AI logistics agent work with a company's own carriers?

An AI logistics agent works with a company's own carriers by executing each coordination step when its trigger happens, and bringing in a person where a decision is needed. Traditional logistics software gives teams information. Wilson executes the work required to move shipments forward.

Step Trigger What Wilson does When a person steps in
Quote A new order arrives from the ERP, spreadsheet, email or file drop Requests quotes from the company's approved carriers, own carriers first Selections above a cost threshold, if configured
Book A carrier is selected Tenders the load, follows up until accepted and generates the rate confirmation, BOL, packing slip and pallet labels If no approved carrier accepts
Confirm The load is booked Confirms and reconfirms the pickup window with the carrier If the carrier can't confirm
Track and update The load is moving Tracks with the best source available (carrier API, GPS or ELD data, the carrier's website by PRO number, or email and calls) and updates the team, shipper and consignee When a delay needs a customer decision
Exception A carrier cancels or misses a pickup Contacts the carrier, notifies the team and initiates rebooking from the approved carrier list Rebooking above the cost threshold
Deliver The load is delivered Confirms delivery and collects the POD If the POD is missing past the set window

Wilson supports LTL, FTL, ocean, drayage, parcel and cross-border freight. When coordination slips, the costs are real: ATRI found truck drivers were detained at 39.3% of stops in 2023. For cancellations, see carrier cancellations and rebooking.

Can a company use an AI logistics agent and a freight broker together?

Yes. Many companies can use both: an AI logistics agent for the freight they move with their own carriers, and a broker for capacity they don't have.

What stays the same with an AI logistics agent is control:

  • Approved carriers only: Wilson tenders to the company's own carriers first and books only carriers the company has approved. Cartage can introduce additional carrier capacity, but the company must approve any carrier before Wilson uses it.
  • Configurable approvals: the team decides which actions proceed automatically and which wait for a person.
  • Escalation: when no approved carrier accepts or a decision is needed, Wilson escalates to the team.
  • Change history: every quote, booking, message and change is recorded.

Wilson starts with assisted execution. Timing depends on scope: most teams start on a few lanes and expand from there. Wilson is not a broker. It replaces the TMS for freight execution and connects to the company's ERP, so a company without a TMS doesn't need to implement one first. FAQs

  • Is an AI logistics agent a freight broker? No. A freight broker is a regulated intermediary that arranges transportation through carriers it sources. An AI logistics agent, such as Wilson, by Cartage, executes a company's freight coordination with the company's own approved carriers.
  • Is Wilson, by Cartage, a freight broker? No. Wilson is an AI logistics agent. It works with the company's approved carriers, within the company's rules, and books only carriers the company has approved.
  • Who chooses the carrier with an AI logistics agent? The company. Wilson selects from the company's approved carriers based on the rules and approvals the team sets.
  • Does a freight broker need a license? In the U.S., freight brokers need broker authority from the FMCSA and must maintain a $75,000 surety bond or trust fund.
  • When should I use a freight broker instead of an AI logistics agent? When the company needs capacity it doesn't have, such as new lanes, volume spikes or hard-to-cover loads.
  • Can I use an AI logistics agent and a broker at the same time? Yes. Many companies can use an AI logistics agent for freight moved with their own carriers and a broker for extra capacity.
  • Does an AI logistics agent replace my carrier relationships? No. It works with the company's existing carriers, so those relationships stay with the company.

Conclusion

A freight broker and an AI logistics agent can both take work off a logistics team, but in different ways. A broker takes the load and finds a carrier. An AI logistics agent keeps the load, the carriers and the decisions with the company, and executes the coordination work itself. Wilson, by Cartage, is an AI logistics agent built for manufacturers and distributors that want to keep their carriers and their control, without the manual follow-up. The practical first step is to start on a few lanes with the company's own carriers and expand from there.
