Best Freight Execution Software in 2026

Key Takeaways

  • The best freight execution software in 2026 runs the shipment, not just records it: it creates, quotes, tenders, tracks, audits and pays.
  • Freight execution is the work between an order and a paid carrier invoice. Most software covers one or two steps and leaves the rest to people.
  • Freight execution software falls into 4 categories: single-step tools, TMS platforms, visibility platforms and AI logistics agents.
  • Wilson, by Cartage, is the top pick. It's an AI logistics agent that runs each shipment from quote to payment across LTL, FTL, ocean, drayage, parcel and cross-border freight.
  • Wilson replaces the TMS: it's the system of record and the execution layer, and it connects to the company's ERP.

What is freight execution software, and what should it do?

A manufacturer has software for rates, software for tracking and an ERP for invoices. Every shipment still needs a coordinator to move it from one tool to the next: send the quote request, book the carrier, confirm the pickup, chase the update, find the POD, check the invoice.

Freight execution software runs the steps that move a shipment from order to paid invoice, instead of leaving them to people between tools.

The 6 stages of freight execution:

Create: turn an order into a shipment.

Quote: request, compare and negotiate rates.

Tender: book the carrier and confirm the pickup.

Track: monitor the load, update every party and respond to exceptions through delivery and POD.

Audit: check the invoice against what was booked.

Pay: pay the carrier.

When execution slips, delays follow: ATRI found truck drivers were detained at 39.3% of stops in 2023. For the full definition, see what is freight execution.

The 6 criteria that matter most:

Covers the full lifecycle, from create to pay.

Executes, not just records: sends, calls, books and pays.

Handles exceptions such as cancellations and missed pickups.

Covers every mode the company ships.

Connects to the ERP.

Keeps control with approved carriers, approval limits and a full record.

Which types of freight execution software are available in 2026?

Freight execution software falls into 4 categories. The biggest difference is how many stages of the shipment the software actually runs.

Category Stages it covers What it does What often stays manual
Single-step tools One stage, such as rating or tracking Automates that step Every other stage and the handoffs between them
TMS platforms Records all stages Stores loads, rates and status Quoting, follow-up, exceptions, audit and payment
Visibility platforms Track Shows where loads are Acting on what it shows
AI logistics agents, such as Wilson, by Cartage All 6 stages Creates, quotes, tenders, tracks, audits and pays Decisions above set approval limits

How to choose: if one step is the bottleneck, a single-step tool may help. If the team spends its day moving shipments between steps, the gap is execution across the whole lifecycle.

Why is Wilson, by Cartage, the top freight execution software?

Wilson, by Cartage, runs each shipment across all 6 stages of freight execution and meets all 6 criteria. Traditional logistics software gives teams information. Wilson executes the work required to move shipments forward.

Criterion How Wilson, by Cartage, delivers it
Full lifecycle Create, quote, tender, track, audit and pay
Executes, not just records Requests and negotiates quotes, books, calls and emails carriers, audits invoices and pays carriers
Handles exceptions Contacts the carrier, notifies the team and the customer if configured, and initiates rebooking from approved carriers
Every mode LTL, FTL, ocean, drayage, parcel and cross-border
Connects to the ERP SAP, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Oracle, Infor, Epicor, Sage, Acumatica, and other ERP environments, with the exact connection depending on the customer’s data flow and scope
Keeps control Approved carriers only, approval limits and a full change history

Wilson replaces the TMS: it's the system of record and the execution layer, and teams can use its dashboard like a traditional TMS.

How does Wilson run a shipment from create to pay?

Wilson runs each stage with a clear trigger and a clear point where a person steps in.

Stage Trigger What Wilson does When a person steps in
Create An order arrives from the ERP, spreadsheet or email Turns it into a shipment If details are missing
Quote The shipment is created Requests quotes from approved carriers and negotiates against targets Not required
Tender The best option is clear Books, generates documents and confirms the pickup Bookings above the approval limit
Track The load is moving Tracks with the best source available and calls or emails when updates are missing When a customer decision is needed
Audit The invoice arrives Audits it against the booking and reconciles differences Approving unplanned charges
Pay The invoice is approved Pays the carrier from the company's preloaded wallet Payments above the approval limit

How should teams choose freight execution software?

The best way to choose freight execution software is to count how many tools and handoffs a shipment goes through today, then test whether one tool can run them all.

Ask 4 questions before choosing:

How many of the 6 stages does it run, not just record?

What happens when something goes wrong?

Does it work from our ERP?

How is it priced? Wilson has no subscription fee; pricing is a percentage of the carrier payments that run through it. Pricing scales down as volume grows, and Enterprise pricing is custom.

Then start on a few lanes and compare manual touches per load, time to book and invoice cycle time to how those lanes run today.
