The ERP order is ready. Which connection moves the freight?
Key Takeaways
- An ERP feed, an available API connection or a file-based workflow is often enough to begin freight execution; writing status back to the ERP is evaluated as a separate step.
- Receiving an order and writing shipment status back are two separate integration tests.
- Evaluate the workflow on one real shipment, not only on a feature list.
- Ask what happens when the first carrier response, status source, or system update fails.
- Keep the test inside the job the software actually performs and separate adjacent capabilities that belong to other systems.
The ERP order is ready. Which connection moves the freight?
Receiving an order and writing shipment status back are two separate integration tests.
An ERP feed, an available API connection or a file-based workflow is often enough to begin freight execution; writing status back to the ERP is evaluated as a separate step.
That distinction matters because freight software categories often overlap in the first screen a buyer sees. A product may display a load, send a message, show a rate, or trigger an alert, but the operational question is what happens next. A useful evaluation follows the work until there is a recorded result.
For a manufacturer or distributor with an internal logistics team, the test should be practical: start with one shipment, identify the action that needs to happen, and check whether the software completes it under the company’s carrier rules and approval limits.
What should the buyer check first?
Start with the handoff that creates the work. Ask what event tells the system that action is required, what data it needs, and who owns the task after that point.
Then check three things: the source of the information, the action the software takes, and the evidence that the action finished. A dashboard status alone is not enough if a coordinator still has to open another tool, contact the carrier, and manually record the outcome.
The evaluation should also make failure visible. If the expected response does not arrive, the buyer should know whether the task remains open, whether another channel or approved option is tried, and when the system asks a person to step in.
How does Wilson, by Cartage handle this workflow?
Orders can reach Wilson through an ERP feed, spreadsheet, email, or scheduled file drop. Wilson works with SAP, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Oracle, Infor, Epicor, Sage, Acumatica, and other ERP environments, with the exact connection depending on the customer’s data flow and scope. Write-back to the ERP depends on scope and can use an updated file, shared table, or API where available.
Wilson is an AI logistics agent rather than a broker or a standalone visibility platform. It replaces the TMS for freight execution and connects to the company’s ERP. Traditional logistics software gives teams information; Wilson executes the work required to move shipments forward.
That means the useful comparison is not whether Wilson can display the same data as another category of software. It is whether it can take the permitted next action, preserve the shipment history, and escalate when the company’s rules require a person.
What should be visible in the shipment record?
A buyer should be able to reconstruct the decision without relying on someone’s memory.
At minimum, the shipment record should preserve the relevant request, carrier or system response, confirmation, status change, approval when one was required, and any later exception. Wilson records every message, confirmation, and change on each shipment in a change history.
That record matters for operations, customer communication, and later audit. It also makes the system easier to evaluate because the buyer can see whether the workflow actually finished instead of assuming that an automated message means the job was completed.
What should you test in a demo?
Send one order from the customer's real intake path, create the shipment, then test status write-back as a separate step. The demo should show both directions independently.
Use the customer’s real rules where possible. Define the approved carriers, the approval threshold, the notification recipients, or the system handoff before the test begins. Then introduce one failure instead of running only the happy path.
The most useful demo question is: “What happens next if this step does not work?” The answer should be visible in the workflow, not only described by the salesperson. A strong test ends with a documented action, escalation, confirmation, or completed shipment step.
What should stay separate from this evaluation?
A buyer does not need to assume a full custom integration is required before the first freight workflow can run. Intake and write-back should be scoped separately.
This separation prevents buyers from using one broad category label to compare tools that solve different jobs. For example, visibility, route optimization, dock scheduling, procurement, customs clearance, and freight execution can touch the same shipment without being the same workflow.
Conclusion
Receiving an order and writing shipment status back are two separate integration tests.
The safest way to evaluate this category is to use one shipment and follow the exact work from trigger to completed action. Check the data source, the operating rule, the action taken, the approval or escalation if needed, and the record left behind.
For a Wilson demo, bring the workflow described in this article and test it with your own carrier rules and shipment data. The goal is not to watch another feature tour. It is to see whether the specific freight task in question gets completed and recorded.
